Career advice, filed plainly

Short, practical notes on job hunting — no filler, no growth-hacker jargon.

Applying

Tailor the top third of your resume

Hiring teams skim. Put the two or three achievements most relevant to the specific role in the first third of the page — reorder freely between applications, it's expected.

Negotiating

Ask for the range before you give a number

If a recruiter asks your salary expectation first, it's fair to ask for the budgeted range for the role. Most will share it, and it saves both sides a mismatched conversation.

Interviewing

Bring two questions that reveal the day-to-day

"What does success look like in the first 90 days?" and "What's the hardest part of this role right now?" tend to surface more than generic culture questions.

Following up

One follow-up at the two-week mark is plenty

A short, polite note two weeks after applying or interviewing is normal and welcomed. More than that starts to work against you.

Career changes

Lead with transferable outcomes, not job titles

Switching fields reads better when your bullet points describe outcomes (reduced costs, shipped a launch, managed a team) rather than titles that won't map cleanly to the new industry.

Pay

Hourly and salaried offers aren't directly comparable

Multiply an hourly rate by roughly 2,080 for a rough annual equivalent, then subtract for the benefits gap before comparing it to a salaried offer.
